Yalıkavak is only 18 kms from the centre of Bodrum and is the area where windmills, the symbol of Bodrum, are most frequently seen, as it receives a lot of wind. One of the windmills is on the shore which you may see working. A charming traditional fishing village, set on the North side of the Bodrum Peninsula.

Although an increasingly popular tourist destination it has still managed to retain its authenticity as a working fishing village, as well as its traditional Turkish identity. The overland journey from Bodrum to Yalikavak provides the visitor with some of the most spectacular scenery on the peninsula.

Slowly climbing through fertile valleys, the road then tops at the mountain range running down the peninsula center, at this point providing unbroken vistas of the north and south coasts before descending to the seaside village of Yalikavak. Yalıkavak is a good walking area. There is a village called Sandima which is 2 kilometers from Yalıkavak.

The village is abondened with its old stone houses but has very panoramic views.

While in Yalıkavak you should go up to the village of Geriş, known as the Tibet of Bodrum. Yalıkavak Market is on Thursday and is popular for its Denizli produced clothes. The small shops in the traffic free town centre have benefitted from sensitive restoration and conversion, and many interesting and unusual souvenirs can be found.

A former water cistern has been converted into a small art gallery which exhibits the works of both local and well known artists.

The gleaming yachts and gaily painted fishing boats in the harbour are a delight to watch from one of the relaxed and friendly waterfront cafes. Combining traditional charm with modern hotel comforts, Yalikavak is the favourite choice of many discerning visitors.
